Coaches' Code of Ethics

Coach Responsibly

❖ Make decisions in the interest of athletes

❖ Foster self-esteem among athletes

❖ Know limitations in terms of knowledge and skills when making decisions

❖ Honour commitments, word given, and agreed objectives

❖ Maintain confidentiality and privacy of personal information

❖ Consider athletes’ future health & well-being as foremost when making decisions about an injured athlete’s ability to continue participating

❖ Treat opponents & officials with due respect both in victory and defeat and encourage athletes to act accordingly

❖ Actively encourage athletes to uphold the rules of wrestling

❖ Communicate and cooperate with a minor athlete's parents or legal guardians, involving them in management decisions pertaining to their child's development.

❖ Be aware of significant pressures in athletes’ lives, & coach in a manner that fosters positive life experiences

❖ Ensure that athletes train and perform in suitable and safe setting

Integrity in relations with others

❖ Avoid situations that may affect objectivity or impartiality of coaching duties

❖ Abstain from all behaviours considered to be harassment or inappropriate relations with an athlete

❖ Always ensure decisions are taken equitably

❖ Act with enthusiasm and a genuine appreciation for sport

❖ Accurately represent personal coaching qualifications, experience, competence and affiliations

❖ Encourage athletes to develop & maintain integrity in their relationships with others

Respect

❖ Ensure that everyone is treated equally, regardless of athletic potential, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, language, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status or disability

❖ Preserve the dignity of each person in interacting with others

❖ Respect the principles, rules, and policies in force

❖ Recognize athletes’ right to consult with other coaches and advisors

❖ Encourage participants to respect one another & to expect respect for their worth as individuals

❖ Give athletes the opportunity to discuss, contribute to & agree with proposals for training & for performance standards

Honouring sport

❖ Observe & ensure observance of all regulations

❖ Aim to compete fairly

❖ Maintain dignity in all circumstances & exercise self-control

❖ Respect officials & accept their decisions without questioning their integrity

❖ Advocate & model the positive aspects of sport

❖ Seek ways to reduce potentially negative aspects of sport

❖ Discourage the use of performance-enhancing drugs; support athletes’ efforts to be drug-free

❖ Maintain the highest standards of personal conduct and role model project a favourable image of the sport & of coaching to athletes, other coaches, officials, spectators, families, the media and the general public
